PEDIGREE OF BLUSPRO FR100
BLUSPRO FR100 flame retardant offers a cost effective way to reduce risk by increasing fire resistance of thatch. The SABS in Groenkloof, Pretoria South Africa tested BLUSPRO FR100 too “section 8 of ASTM E108 Standard Test Methods for Fire Tests on Roof Coverings as required by section 8.2.3 of SANS 10407;2006 Class A”, and a test report has been issued in this regard. Tested and approved by the South African Insurance Association (SAIA) Approved Products in 2005 for insurance purposes, it delayed flame propagation on BLUSPRO FR100-treated thatch by over an hour while the untreated thatch under the same conditions failed within 6 minutes. These approved accreditation enables BLUSPRO`S customers to apply for and negotiate reduced insurance premiums or access premium from associated insurance providers.
Trained BLUSPRO personnel apply BLUSPRO FR100 flame retardant by high-pressure spraying to new or refurbished thatch roofs. Protection on both sides (the exterior and interior) is recommended. BLUSPRO FR100 flame retardant is safe to workmen and inhabitants. It is water-based, and cures within one hour after application and does not release toxic volatile organic compounds. It is environmentally safe; its main ingredient is phosphate (phosphate is a common ingredient in agricultural fertilizer and in well-known soft drinks). The water-insoluble phosphate used in BLUSPRO FR100 imparts flame-retarding properties, limits run-off with rainwater and prolongs the fire retardant properties of the treated thatch. In addition, BLUSPRO FR100 also provides UV and biocide protection.
A lifespan of 5-7 years could be expected from the applied product. Under ideal conditions lifespan could easily exceed 10 years. However, thatch lifespan is strongly affected by local weather conditions, quality of thatching materials and design and workmanship of the thatched structure. These could retard or adversely accelerate degradation of thatch.
BLUSPRO FR100 flame retardant is transparent, and when applied it is a white milky color.

SABS TEST
THIS TEST WAS PERFORMED BY SABS COMMERCIAL [PTY] LTD
SABS TEST: SPREAD OF FLAME TEST ON THATCH ROOF SPRAYED WITH “BLUS PRO FR 100”
DESCRIPTION OF SAMPLE
The sample consisted of two thatch roof specimens, spray treated with “Blus Pro FR 100” fire retardant chemical by means of a spray gun and compressor at the Fire Protection Engineering laboratory of the SABS in Pretoria on 11 October 2007
Measurement done on the thatch roof specimens were recorded as follows:
Length : 4 000 mm Width : 1 100 mm
Thickness : 200 mm Nozzle diameter : 1 mm "Diagonal"
Pressure on gauge : 20 bar I Application Rate: 1 l/m2” approximate
A single coating of “Blus Pro FR 100" was sprayed on the entire thatch root from the top, bottom and underside. The application procedure was followed by the sponsor during the spraying of the thatch and is attached to this report.
NATURE AND METHOD OF TEST
A spread of flame test was conducted to section 8 of ASTM E108" Standard Test Methods for Fire Tests on Roof Coverings“ as required by section 8.2.3 of SANS 1040722006 “Thatched roof construction."
The gas flame was applied to the thatch for 10 min. as required by Class A and B roof coverings.
RESULTS
The following results were calculated from the data obtained during the 2 tests:
Both specimens burnt less than 1.2 m and the thatch roofs treated with “ Blus Pro FR 100" is classified as Class A fire protection system.
